Shared architecture has its own grammar: storage, thresholds, acoustics, and the quiet art of never bumping into each other.
Eight households, one villa, and the design problem that mattered more than any of the finishes: how do you give people genuine privacy and a genuine shared space, in the same building, without either one feeling like an afterthought?
Two ways shared design usually fails
Most shared-ownership design fails quietly in one of two directions. Either it over-privatises — eight small, sealed-off units that could just as well be eight separate flats, defeating the point of sharing a beautiful piece of land at all. Or it over-communalises — big shared living areas and thin, dormitory-style private rooms that no family actually wants to bring their in-laws to.
One rule instead
We designed around a simple rule: private spaces should feel completely private, and shared spaces should feel worth sharing. Each household's suite is self-contained — its own entry sequence, its own sitting area, doors that actually close — so that two families staying the same weekend never feel like they are sharing a hotel corridor. The shared spaces, in turn, are the ones nobody would build for themselves alone: a proper veranda facing the valley, a kitchen large enough for more than one family to cook in at once, a pool deck that only makes sense at that scale.
Scheduling logic, disguised as design
With eight households, usage nights overlap by necessity, so common areas needed enough separation that overlapping stays feel companionable rather than crowded — sightlines broken up, seating clustered rather than lined up in a single hall.
None of this is about luxury for its own sake. It is about making sure that on the one weekend a year two families happen to overlap, both leave wanting to come back — because that, more than any brochure line, is what makes shared ownership actually work over a decade.
